New work by Kirsten Brünjes and Bernd Fischer at Galerie Heller. This is a duet of artists from Bremen, admittedly an unequal one, who came together for the latest exhibition at Galerie Heller – a harmony of contrasts. This is where the grotesque figures by Kirsten Brünjes (*1964) scurry to and fro, midgets, little creatures, hybrids, mutations, fragile and delicate but robustly self-confident, serious but ironic, strangely familiar and uniquely alien, introverted but seeking eye contact, attractive but repellent (photo left). How different are the mural pieces by Bernd Fischer (*1956). A graduate of the University in Kassel and once a devotee of the vessel, rips and folds slabs of paperclay to make mural sculptures and coats them in mainly monochrome washes of ink. The effect is entrancing.
